The European Grid Initiative

What is EGI?

Egi LogoThe European Grid Initiative (EGI) is a partnership between National Grid Initiatives (NGIs) and a coordinating body, the EGI Organisation (EGI.eu). Within the EGI partnership, NGIs and EGI.eu will work together to operate and further develop a sustainable pan-European grid infrastructure, enabling optimal sharing of computing and data resources. The EGI.eu is the ‘glue’ enabling coherence between the NGIs for the benefit of the international user community. The headquarters of EGI.eu will be located in Amsterdam, and full operation of the organisation is anticipated to begin in 2010 at the latest.

The Road to EGI

The EGI Design Study (EGI_DS) was in charge of defining and implementing EGI's activities, and coordinated the efforts of the participating countries as they moved towards the EGI model. EGI_DS was launched in September 2007, with the support of the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme, and closed at the end of 2009. The EGI_DS project had nine principal partners: CESNET, CERN, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), CSC Finnish IT Centre for Science, Deutsche Forschungsnetz (DFN), Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET), Institut für Graphische und Parallele Datenverarbeitung (GUP), Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
