Try the Grid

For a brief introductory walkthrough of the grid, try the GILDA Grid Demonstrator (opens in a new window), accept the certificate and follow the steps as described in the EGEE Grid Walkthrough below. The GILDA Grid Demonstrator is a secure area on the GILDA Testbed which is used for training purposes.

The EGEE Grid Walkthrough

A video tutorial is also available for the GILDA Demonstrator, explaining the main features which are not all covered in the walkthrough.

Portal Access

If users need access the the EGEE Grid's resources, they will have to be authorised through a Virtual Organisation (VO).

Once a member of a VO has been authorised, they will probably access the grid via a 'portal' (in this case we are using the GILDA Grid Tutor portal). A Portal is simply a webpage which leaves the complicated technicalities to the technicians, and allows the user to submit jobs in a relatively user friendly manner. Of course, you still need to know what you are doing, and the grid tutorial explains the steps involved in preparing, submitting and retrieving a job on the grid. It is possible to use the grid without a portal just by using command line interfaces, but this demands a greater level of technical ability and will not be covered in this section.

Already a VO member?

If you have already gone through the process of being authorised as a user and you would just like to recap on using the portal, writing JDL files and submitting and recieving jobs, you should use this grid tutorial.
